Wyoming District Pastors' Conference Resolution & Mysterious Mr. Faur

By: Rev. Jack Cascione

Last week the Wyoming District pastor's passed the following simple resolution:

Be it resolved that we express the deep concern of the Wyoming District over the termination of Dr. Wallace Schulz, seemingly for the faithful execution of his duties as the 2nd VP of Synod; and be it finally

Resolved, that we ask for his reinstatement.

Just who is Peter Faur?

There has been a lot of information circulating lately about a man named Peter Faur who is working for the International Lutheran Laymen's League. Whether this is in an official, unofficial capacity or as a consultant remains to be seen.

The information sent to Reclaim News indicates that Mr. Peter Faur is a  professional crisis manager.  Raised in the LCMS, he apparently is now a member of an ELCA congregation in St. Louis, even being listed as doing their web page:

In his student days he was editor of the student newspaper at Concordia- River Forest. Here is a quote from one of his articles published in THE SPECTATOR of October 15, 1971: "We cannot, therefore, deny women the right to ordination on the basis of a few verses from St. Paul.  The message has to be reworked for us twentieth century people. Women teachers have every reason to be outraged at Preus' remarks. In fact, all teachers do."

Faur's writings were also critical of Jacob Preus for his actions against Dr. Arlis Ehlen, a higher critic on the St. Louis faculty in those days.

It is believed that he was taken to task for all this by Herman Otten in Christian News.  It appears to many that Mr. Faur has perhaps returned for another attempt at changing the doctrine and practice of the LCMS.

So how did his name surface?  The document properties of many circulating documents dealing with the removal of Wallace Schulz list Mr. Peter Faur as the author including

1. The First and Second Sets of LLL Talking (Copy) Points

2. The Second Set of Stipulations themselves (perhaps the first as well?)

3. Al Waldron's letter to the Board of Governors of Sept. 18

4. Jim Dankenbring's letter to the Board of Governor's of Sept. 11 (it originated at a firm called "SFBB" and was last saved by "Faur")

5. Rodger Hebermehl's letter of termination to Dr. Schulz on Sept. 17
(authored by Faur five days earlier)

6. The September 18 LHM News Release.

If the above is true, one cannot help but wonder what else Mr. Faur has been involved with, or who else may be involved in the scandal leading up to the termination of Dr. Schulz.

At the very least Mr. Faur's involvement with the present scandal in the LLL raises many serious questions: Who is paying his bill?  Who is he responsible to?  Why does he originally author letters from LLL executives? Is he just managing the crisis, or was he involved before the crisis began? Who else is behind his involvement?  Is there a link to "Jesus First" and the involvement of others who should not be meddling in the affairs of the Lutheran Laymen's League, much less the Synod?
